100% Home Equity Assistance in CFIRP

For the love of God, please help us!

This has been a bad week. I thought I could keep it together until the end, but I can’t. The Judicial Review will go ahead but there has been a significant cost for this CF Family. Let me explain.

I took some time at lunch today to go to the cenotaph, being just short of D-day.  I noticed on the back there is an inscription which reads:

“In the city archives are treasured the names of thirteen hundred and sixty men and women whose sacrifice is perpetuated by this memorial”. So, I wandered across the grand parade to city hall. I asked if I could view these treasured names. “Sorry sir, we cannot locate them, but if you leave your name and contact information…”

I just wanted to know what I was fighting for. I guess I found my answer.

The whole Home Equity Assistance fight was about getting what we were entitled to under the law, about accountability, doing what is right and looking out for our families and our troops. This isn’t a handout, it is holding the government accountable for their promise to reimburse equity loss. It takes a good deal for a family of 7 to recoup, $73,000.  Actually, it cannot be done, I am a witness to that.

3 and a half years have passed. Nothing. No movement, no help and only the smallest of interest from my fellow Canadians (which is greatly appreciated). While the help was not enough, I spent the rest of my lunch contemplating my next move. I knew what it was, I had them on the other side of the counter before, but I had never gone through with it.

I took my two most prized possessions – my wedding band and my Medals. Sold them both.

I have said good bye to my wife as we cannot remain together while this is going on. The fighting and stress used to be unbearable, until this weekend when I realized that I was the problem. I have spent so much on trying to resolve this, that I have neglected my family.  I can’t begin to explain the pressure, fortunately, God did not give me the strength to commit suicide.

So this is my plea. I have done everything that has been asked of me by my country, and it has cost me my family, my mind, our children’s future…everything which I went to war for.

I do thank those who tried to help, but even the powerful have bosses.

I ask, most humbly for forgiveness to those I hurt; my family, my friends, my peers.

As for me, there is nothing left. I am a shell of a man who has fought a good fight, but until this week did not know defeat. I did the right thing, I stayed within the lines, it cost me everything.

Subject: RE: Marcus Brauer and the Home Equity Assistance Program

Dear Mr. Chisholm:

Thank you for your correspondence of September 13, 2012, on behalf of Major Marcus Brauer, concerning the Home Equity Assistance (HEA) benefit and the Treasury Board Secretariat (TBS) review of Bon Accord market for the period between 2007 and 2010.

On June 22, 2012, an email communication between the Director Compensation and Benefits Administration (DCBA) and TBS staff confirmed that decisions on HEA reviews could soon be expected. The TBS decision letter on the market assessment for Bon Accord, a protected letter addressed to DCBA dated July 17, 2012, was received by DCBA on July 23, 2012. On July 30, 2012, DCBA informed Major Brauer of the TBS decision via email and included a copy of the TBS protected letter dated July 17, 2012. The TBS decision stated that Bon Accord, Alberta (which is included within the Greater Edmonton Area) was not deemed to be a depressed market for the period of 2007 to 2010, and, therefore, Major Brauer’s request for 100 percent reimbursement of the loss on the sale of his residence in Bon Accord was denied.

I am confident that throughout this process the Department of National Defence ensured Treasury Board approved policies and procedures were respected at all times. With respect to your request that I engage Minister Tony Clement to ensure fair and equitable treatment for Major Brauer and other members in similar situations, I can assure you that DCBA has liaised with TBS staff ensuring each and every file has been dealt with using the utmost professionalism, empathy, and due diligence
All our members have received and continue to receive fair and equitable treatment.

I trust this information is helpful, and thank you again for writing.

Sincerely,

Peter MacKay
Minister of National Defence

I see you are passing through a diificult time but you need to calm down, take a pause a rewire you mind. You are a very important person for this beautiful family, they need you.! Think to make a swith in your life, you have many skills that you can transfer to some other different occupations. Maybe you can be your own boss, at the begining would be slow and difficult but with the energy, goal oriented and persistance you will find your NEW way of life. Today innovation, innovation is a most. I can not understand why the goverment is not supporting all the financial and emotional needs of our Canadian forces for are doing all the best to protect us. Be smart and reorganize yourself with you family in a different way.

  5. Marcus…I do not get all your posts…I have sent a friend request! I am ashamed at the response of our government and want you to tell me how I can help….who can I write to? I have heard other stories of dreadful treatment of friends of mine who have family in the military. Above all…please keep hope…you are an honourable man and so valued by so many. Your words are desperate…please do not do by choice what happened to me and my kids by chance! You have a large family….beyond the obvious…who love and support you!

    • Hello Myra,

I just spoke to the wife of Marcus, she agreed that we go viral on this, he need all our help right now, nothing less nothing more.

Just post it to your friends list and ask them to share it, as it is a cry for help and he need it desperately, Marcus can not come right now and comment because he need help himself. So I am doing it for him but at the same time I must keep working in my kennel. So I did some post and already got slam by one facebook user that found my post not following one group policy, well I prefer to be ban of that group then doing nothing. The doing nothing is what is hurting Marcus right now. He need more then kinds world he need that his story go viral on the internet, he need to know that every Canadian know what the government doing to him and our soldier. Think of the Senate right now and you will see the unfair treatment we are doing to the one that follow the rules and abide by them and during that time we tolerate injustice in our own government.

This is a sad day when a Officer go public like that regarding unfair treatment by the government and I must emphases it not the CF but rather treasury board in our own government that do not want to pay. Talk about supporting our Troups! Yeah right.

    • Hi Myra,

Thank-you for your words! Marcus is okay and currently on base and receiving wonderful assistance from the ‘God Squad’ to medical. He has been working on this issue for so long and so hard that he is exhausted. He has been staying on base for the past week as it is unhealthy for the children to be subjected to this and he needs quiet. Thank-you again for your response; it means the world – I will pass this message on to him when he is able to receive it.

      Take good care, Juanita

  6. Marcus, my father was a vet (second World War), and a Catholic. He was imprisoned during the war, escaped and returned to find his family home burned to the ground and his mother dead. He rebuilt his life, but then the Communists took over, and he decided to flee (Hungary) to ensure freedom for his only child (me). He came to Canada in 1956, and he turned to the Catholic Church for help, but they denied him because he had married a Protestant woman. Talk about being let down by the system. Talk about losing it all, over and over. But he kept fighting, re-established himself, struggling with PTSD (at the time not really recognized) and though he never found happiness, his consolation came from the fact that his only child had been given a chance. It’s all about the children (yours and others’). Don’t lose sight of the goal. Don’t count on the system. Katalin in Rockland.
P.S. Bless you Michel for bringing this to our attention.

  7. Ok I own a local business and we just started in mid December 2012 and I am going to post this blog in all my group. I want this to go viral I want Marcus Bruaer to become the ‘Justin Beaber’ of the internet. I want the truth to come out and loud and I will make reference to Mike Duffy and that “nice” ex-reporter” Pamela Wallin, that have expended our public money in the magnitude of $300.000.00 in traveling when we don’t even cover the real cost of loosing money on your own home. I want everyone here to do the right thing and start to post his ordeal with the Canadian government…. Do you get it everyone, this Officer of the Canadian Forces is doing the right thing for everyone and only about $3000.00 has been raised since he started to try to raise money. His career is probably now finish and if I follow my experience in the CF if no one do the right thing his career is now finish, unless there is a outrage in the Canadian public and strong support for him.

Please together we need to do something before the irreparable happen and that we lost Marcus Brauer a fine Officer and honorable men and father with a family that need him.

  9. Marcus. You are an honourable man, caught up in dis belief that you are surrounded by criminals. Men of integrity and loyalty struggle with the actions of those who choose to act in the manner on which you have been subject to. Take a step back. Pause. Reflect and recharge. You have ” friends” . This despair will pass.

  10. I too have been in a situation where I have found myself looking up at rock bottom. Many have told me at that time that I will rise higher, faster and find great happiness if just stay on the course. I did and everything worked out for the better. You will be fine. Your fight is a noble one. You have the education and smarts where others you represent do not. Don’t give up. Just take a break, sit back, reload and when your clearly see the way ahead, recharge yourself and fight again. Hang in there buddy.

  12. Marcus, I want you to know that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. I have been in the same kind of situation then you. Don’t do anything irreversible and in the process hurt your family and yourself also. I have lost my CF career with my stroke and my old family in the process due to the added stress, been without future, please consider they’re many path in your journey. Did you contact news organizations regarding how low you are regarding your morale. I will not offer one size fit all solution, just know that my solution was to recuperate, refocus on my dilemma and act upon it. I decided to do a 180° turn in my
I life and build my own enterprise and reassure my future.

    • Michel,

Those are kind words. It is good to hear that people are able to turn things around. The military can be a hard life and harder on the families. I am on IR in Kingston but live near Rockland and come home every weekend. I would like to meet you and learn more about your journey. I am also very interested in the furniture business for when I leave the Army. If you are interested please send me an email.
